Onero™ Treatment Program: Orthopedic Center of Florida’s Revolutionary Bone Health Solution

Onero Logo

At the Orthopedic Center of Florida, we are proud to offer the groundbreaking Onero™ treatment program, an evidence-based exercise program to strengthen bone and muscle, especially designed for people with low bone mass. This innovative approach represents a paradigm shift in how we treat osteoporosis and osteopenia, moving beyond traditional low-intensity exercise recommendations to deliver clinically proven results that can transform your bone health and quality of life.

What Makes the Onero™ Unique?

Onero™ is a high-intensity resistance and impact exercise program to strengthen bone and muscle, specifically developed for individuals diagnosed with osteoporosis, osteopenia, or those at risk for bone loss. Unlike conventional exercise programs that may provide minimal bone-building benefits, Onero™ utilizes targeted, high-intensity loading exercises that have been scientifically proven to stimulate bone formation and increase bone mineral density.

The program is supervised by our accredited practitioners, who have completed specialized training in the Onero™ methodology. This ensures that every aspect of your treatment is delivered safely and effectively, while taking into account your individual health status, limitations, and goals.

Who Can Benefit from Onero™?

The Onero™ program is particularly beneficial for individuals who have been diagnosed with:

  • Osteoporosis
  • Osteopenia (low bone mass)
  • Age-related bone loss
  • Secondary osteoporosis due to medications or medical conditions
  • History of fragility fractures
  • High risk for falls and fractures

The program is also suitable for individuals who want to proactively maintain and improve their bone health as they age, even if they haven’t yet been diagnosed with bone loss.

The Science Behind Onero™

Onero™ is an evidence-based exercise program developed from the LIFTMOR study, conducted at Griffith University under the supervision of Professor Belinda Beck, and recently published in the Journal of Bone Mineral Research (2018). This landmark research challenged conventional wisdom about exercise and bone health, demonstrating that carefully supervised high-intensity resistance and impact training could be both safe and effective for individuals with compromised bone health.

The LIFTMOR study’s findings were eye-opening, showing that participants who engaged in high-intensity resistance training experienced significant improvements in bone mineral density, posture, and functional capacity. These results formed the foundation for the Onero™ program, which has been successfully implemented in clinical settings since 2015.

The Proof is in the Results

The effectiveness of the Onero™ program is supported by impressive clinical outcomes. Data collected from patients participating in the program shows remarkable improvements in bone health:

  • 86% of patients increased bone mass at the lumbar spine
  • 69% of patients increased bone mass at the hip

These results represent a significant breakthrough in osteoporosis treatment. Traditional exercise programs often fail to produce measurable increases in bone mineral density, yet the Onero™ approach consistently delivers positive outcomes for the vast majority of participants. Ongoing data collection indicates that Onero™ increases bone mass, improves posture, and decreases falls in clinic patients.

How Onero™ Differs from Traditional Exercise Programs

Many patients with osteoporosis have been told to engage in gentle, low-impact activities like walking or swimming. While these activities have general health benefits, not all exercise improves bone mass. The key difference lies in the intensity and specificity of the loading stimulus applied to the bones.

Low-intensity exercise is not considered to be an effective strategy to build bone. Bones respond to mechanical stress by becoming stronger and denser, but only when that stress reaches a critical threshold. The Onero™ program is designed to provide precisely this type of stimulus in a safe, controlled environment.

The high-intensity nature of Onero™ exercises may seem counterintuitive for individuals with fragile bones. But research has shown that certain kinds of high-intensity loading can be both safe and effective even for people with low bone mass if supervised under the right conditions. In fact, injuries, which can be a concern in the frail older population, are rare from Onero™ training when properly supervised.

The Onero™ Assessment Process

Safety is paramount in the Onero™ program. We begin by having our accredited Onero practitioner conduct a comprehensive initial assessment. This initial assessment is mandatory.

During this assessment, your practitioner will evaluate:

  • Current bone mineral density levels
  • Medical history and existing conditions
  • Previous injuries or limitations
  • Current fitness level and functional capacity
  • Balance and coordination abilities
  • Cardiovascular health status
  • Risk factors for fractures

This assessment of your current health status allows us to personalize your Onero™ training in its initial stages, minimizing any risk of injury or exacerbation of existing conditions.

Supervised Training and Ongoing Support

After the initial assessment, you can commence Onero™ training with one of Orthopedic Center of Florida’s accredited Onero™ practitioners, who will provide close supervision as you continue to train. This hands-on approach ensures that exercises are performed with proper form and technique, loads are progressed appropriately, and any concerns are addressed immediately.

Your practitioner will work with you to develop an individualized exercise prescription that takes into account your specific needs, goals, and limitations. The program typically includes:

  • Progressive resistance training using specialized equipment
  • Impact loading exercises tailored to your tolerance
  • Functional movement patterns to improve daily activities
  • Balance and coordination training to reduce fall risk
  • Posture correction exercises

The supervision provided by accredited practitioners goes beyond simple exercise instruction. An accredited Onero™ practitioner will know how to correctly:

  • Assess your current health, including any pre-existing injuries or conditions;
  • Report your baseline assessment results and yearly results to you and your GP;
  • Deliver the Onero™ program; and
  • Know when to progress, regress, or maintain your program.

Long-Term Monitoring and Results

The Onero™ program includes built-in monitoring to track your progress and ensure continued safety and effectiveness. After 12 months of monitored Onero™ training, we will perform a review assessment to determine if you have had any changes in your balance, posture, and other functional outcomes related to your risk of fracture.

This comprehensive approach to monitoring allows for objective measurement of improvements in:

  • Bone mineral density
  • Muscle strength and power
  • Balance and stability
  • Functional capacity
  • Posture alignment
  • Fall risk assessment
