April is Occupational Therapy Month, and the Orthopedic Center of Florida (OCF) is proud to celebrate the dedicated work of occupational therapists across the country. At OCF, we see the impact of this care every day—helping patients of all ages overcome challenges and regain independence through personalized, hands-on treatment. This month, we’re also highlighting the important role OT plays in our own community and sharing expert insights from our in-house specialist, Vikki Velez, OTR/L, who is currently welcoming new patients.
Occupational therapy focuses on helping individuals participate fully in the activities that matter most—whether that’s brushing teeth, returning to work, managing daily routines or recovering after surgery. By addressing physical, cognitive, or sensory challenges, occupational therapists help patients improve their quality of life through practical, evidence-based interventions.
Supporting Children in Their Development
For children, occupational therapy can be a game changer. Therapists work with young patients to strengthen fine and gross motor skills, improve coordination, and navigate sensory sensitivities. Whether it’s helping a child learn to hold a pencil, improve balance and body awareness, or build social and emotional skills, OT plays a critical role in supporting growth both at home and in the classroom.
Promoting Independence in Adults and Seniors
Adults and seniors often turn to occupational therapy after an injury or surgery, such as a joint replacement or stroke. Therapists provide guided rehabilitation to restore strength, mobility, and confidence. For those managing conditions like Alzheimer’s or dementia, OT also offers memory support and practical tools for maintaining daily routines.
Meet Our OT Specialist: Vikki Velez, OTR/L
Vikki Velez, OTR/L, is a licensed occupational therapist at OCF specializing in upper extremity rehabilitation and hand therapy. With dual degrees from Keiser University and a background as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA), Vikki combines advanced training with a patient-first approach. She is certified in Physical Agent Modalities (PAMS) and is an active member of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), Florida Occupational Therapy Association (FOTA), and the Coalition of Occupational Therapy Advocates for Diversity (COTAD).
“Occupational therapy is about meeting people where they are—physically, emotionally, and mentally—and helping them move forward with purpose,” says Velez. “We’re here to help unlock potential and restore hope.”
In honor of OT Month, our team encourages families and caregivers to explore easy ways to support independence at home. Keeping living areas clutter-free, using adaptive tools like jar openers or grab bars, and encouraging creative activities like drawing or puzzles can make a big difference. Establishing consistent daily routines can also boost confidence and reduce stress for individuals recovering from injury or navigating cognitive challenges.
