Imaging

Testing and diagnostic procedures are integral in the identification and treatment of orthopedic and sports medicine conditions. The outstanding staff at the Orthopedic Center of Florida (OCF) uses advanced technology to ensure the highest quality of your diagnostic images. Our mission is to provide our patients with a compassionate treatment plan and offer comprehensive services needed for state of the art treatment with an emphasis on early activity and minimum down time.

Digital X-Ray

A proper X-Ray is probably the first and foremost piece of diagnostic information that aides in your diagnosis and treatment. OCF’s X-Ray department is completely digital, offering the following:

Immediate Availability – The procedure is usually completed within ten minutes. All images are immediately stored in PACS (Picture Archiving Communication System) and sent to your doctor’s computer.

High Quality & Resolution with Low Radiation – The level of radiation exposure from X-Rays is not harmful, but we will take special precautions if a patient is pregnant.

Unique Protocols – Limb length discrepancy evaluation is offered to create an exact template of lower limb lengths, which assist in treating malalignment and is used for surgical planning in the lower extremity

Fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy is an imaging technique that uses low dose focused x-rays for guidance during injections and procedures. This imaging modality allows for enhanced visualization and more accurate placement of injections with less trauma and the ability to use smaller instruments.

Fluoroscopy can be used in conjunction with certain injectable dyes that enhance visualization and improve diagnosis. It can also be used for real time fracture reduction when manipulation and correction is needed in the office.

MUSCULOSKELETAL ULTRASOUND

High resolution ultrasound can be used as a first line imaging modality to assess and diagnose soft tissue pathology of tendons, muscles, ligaments, and peripheral nerves of the musculoskeletal system.

Ultrasound benefits include:

  • Real time evaluation of soft tissue thickness, viscosity of fluid, and point of maximal intensity pain.
  • Ability to evaluate structures through range of motion.
  • Evaluation of stress fractures, joint inflammation, strains/sprains, tendonitis, hematoma, muscle tears, and disruptions.
  • Provides PRECISE guidance for injections, needle placement for biopsy, aspiration, and visualize of needle placement.
  • Non-invasive, cost effective modality that frequently eliminated the necessity for an MRI.

Diagnostic Testing

EMG/NCV

Nerve Conduction Velocity testing (NCV) as well as electromyography (EMG) are performed within the office at OCF to diagnose nerve, muscle as well as neck and lower back pain. This test is used in conjunction with your clinical examination as well as any MRIs that may need to be performed to diagnose numbness, tingling, pain, weakness or muscle cramping/twitching in your arms, legs, neck or back. We can also do Botox with EMG guidance for disorders such as cervical dystonia, and upper limb spasticity. These disorders can frequently happen in patients who have multiple sclerosis or strokes.

Vascular Ultrasound

A vascular ultrasound is a non-invasive ultrasound method (also called a duplex study) used to examine the circulation in the blood vessels of the body. Vascular ultrasound can be used to evaluate arteries or veins in nearly any part of the body, including blood vessels in the neck, abdomen, arms and legs. This technology uses sound waves to evaluate the body’s circulatory system and helps identify blockages and detect blood clots. This is often used to evaluate a patient’s ability to heal from surgery. Many patients, including smokers and those with diabetes, may benefit from this routine non-painful screening test.

Robotic Laser

Laser Therapy is a new technology that uses specific wavelengths of light to treat painful and debilitating conditions. A patient may experience a comfortable sensation at the point of application and then light energy enters the damaged cells and stimulates inter-cellular activity. This painless laser treatment, that lasts an average of eight minutes, reduces pain in the area and speeds recovery of the damaged cells. Once the cells recover, the healing process is complete.

It is critical that a patient complete the course of treatments recommended by the doctor or symptoms are likely to reoccur.

Most people experience positive results in one to three treatments, with the average course of treatment being six to ten sessions. Swelling is greatly reduced including a rapid relief of pain. Acute conditions usually subside quickly, typically within one phase of treatments, while chronic conditions can be controlled with regular treatments.

FAQ’s about MLS Laser Pain Therapy

Q: Can I use my Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) for MLS Laser Therapy?

A: MLS Laser Therapy may be covered by Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA). If you participate in a HSA or FSA, please contact your human resource department or HSA/FSA provider to inquire how to be reimbursed.

Q: Is the MLS Laser Therapy covered by insurance?

A: MLS Laser Therapy is not covered by insurance. However, if you are being treated as part of a workman’s compensation claim, your MLS Therapy treatments may be covered.

Q: What if I don’t feel full relief from the MLS Laser Therapy Treatments?

A: For a small percentage of patients, the laser treatments may provide only temporary or limited relief. Just as with all treatments for pain and injury, it is not possible to predict who will receive full relief.

Q: Will the MLS Laser Therapy help bone fractures heal more quickly?

A: Studies have shown this laser stimulates the bone healing process. Our experience shows that Laser treatment appears to speed up the healing process and can decrease the recovery time by half or more.

Q: Will the Laser hurt or damage my eyes?

A: No. Protective eyewear is worn by the patient and therapist operating the laser, as well as anyone else in the treatment room.

Q: Is there a difference between the robotic laser and the handheld laser?

A: No. During your treatment, the therapist may switch from the large laser to the handheld laser. The handheld laser allows the therapist to treat a smaller area. The strength of the laser is the same.

Q: Who should not have laser therapy?

A: Laser therapy cannot be given directly over an area within 48 hours after cortisone injection, over an area with cancer and over the abdomen of pregnant women.

Q: When can a person receive more laser treatments?

A: A person can have additional laser treatments within 3-6 months after the initial treatment series.

Q: What type of results can I expect from the MLS Laser Therapy?

A: More than 90% of our patients have experienced significant improvement of their symptoms in as little as one to two treatments.

Q: How long is the treatment?

A: The length of the treatment and the number of treatments needed vary by patient and condition. Most acute conditions less than three month’s duration are treated with one phase of six short treatments. Most chronic conditions greater than three months duration can be successfully controlled with one phase of 10 short treatments followed by an occasional maintenance treatment. Each treatment averages 8 minutes.

Q: Are there side effects?

A: There are no known side effects. While a few patients have stated they feel a comfortable warm sensation in the area being treated, patients don’t usually feel the laser. There is no pain, heat, redness, or swelling during or after treatment.

Q: How does the MLS Laser work?

A: The area to be treated is carefully outlined and MLS Laser Therapy is applied in a rhythmic manner. The dual action and precise synchronization of pulsed and continuous laser emissions work at the cellular level and strengthen the therapeutic effect. MLS Laser Therapy promotes healing and quickly brings cells back to optimal condition—all in an 8 minute session.

Q: What type of conditions does MLS Laser Treatment Therapy treat?

A: Tendonitis, such as golf and tennis elbow • Plantar Fasciitis • Epicondylitis Trauma Muscle Strains • Sprains, Contusions, Neck & Back Pain • Bursitis • Re-Occurring chronic tendinitis of the neck, shoulder, back, hands, fingers, knees, ankles and feet • Increases post-surgical healing and recovery

Q: Is the MLS Laser a hot or cold laser?

A: This type of laser is a state of the art class IV infrared cold laser.

Q: How is MLS Laser Therapy different from other laser therapies currently offered?

A: Current traditional laser therapy provides partial treatment at best by reducing inflammation or pain but never both at the same time. MLS Laser Therapy synchronizes the dual action of both continuous and pulsed light therapy to reduce pain, swelling, and speed healing and recovery.

Q: How does it work?

A: The light energy (photons) penetrates deeply into damaged cells and stimulates cellular activity. As a result of exposure to the laser, the cells of tendons, ligaments and muscles repair themselves.

Q: What is laser therapy?

A: Laser therapy is a therapeutic treatment that uses light energy (photons) for tissue healing and pain reduction. Until now, there have been only pulsed light lasers that control swelling and continuous light lasers that control pain, but not both.
